The biggest battle of cricket war starts today to beat the summer heat, IPL Season fourth is back with two new teams joining the league Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India, the 10 teams are divided into 2 groups. The number of league matches has been increased from 64 to 74. There will be 70 league matches plus four play-off games in a complicated system with each team playing the same number of matches (14 matches for each team).
Group A | Group B |
Deccan Chargers | Kolkata Knight Riders |
Mumbai Indians | Rajasthan Royals |
Pune Warriors India | Chennai Super Kings |
To simplify, each of the teams from one group plays the teams in the same row and same column twice and all others once. For instance, Deccan Chargers will play Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians, Pune Warriors India (all from same row) and Kolkata Knight Riders two times (one home and one away basis) and Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings one time each.
Play-off round will have four matches including the final. The first play-off will be between the top two teams from the group stage. The winner of this playoff, also called Qualifier 1, will go straight to the finals. While the loser will still have a chance to qualify for the finals as it will participate in the third playoff match with the winner of the second play-off or the Eliminator.
The Eliminator will be played between the third and fourth teams from the group stage and the winner will qualify to play with the loser of Qualifier 1 (discussed above). Here, in Eliminator, the losing team won't get another chance and will be out of the contention of final.
The third play-off, or the Qualifier 2, will be contested between the loser of the Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator. The winner of this match would play the winner of Qualifier 1 in the final.
This format gives the best and the second best teams two chances to reach the finals unlike the semifinal formats where the best teams may get knocked out in one match.
