Kurt Cobain Unveiled in Washington

Kurt Cobain Unveiled in Washington

The first thing you notice on the way into this logging town on Highway 12 is the sign that says “Welcome to Aberdeen.  Come As You Are.”  A nice nod to Kurt Cobain, the most famous person to ever be associated with the place.

There’s now a second Kurt-wuz-here landmark:  a sculpted guitar memorial in a park near the Young Street bridge.  Legend has it that Kurt spent a lot of time on, around and under that bridge as a kid.  (If you’re a hardcore Nirvana fan, you might remember the reference in the song “Something in the Way” that goes “Underneath the bridge/The tarp has sprung a leak/And all the animals I’ve trapped/Have all become my pets.”)
There’s also a steel ribbon dangling that quotes “On a Plain”:   “One more special message/And then I’m done/And I can go home.”

The unveiling of the new sculpture was, of course, timed to coincide with the 17th anniversary of Kurt’s death.  The best forensics evidence have him dying on April 5, but we didn’t hear the news until April 8.
